Playing the Ocarina

Playing the Ocarina

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword has been out for a while now, and every time we think of the game series’ protagonist, Link, we can’t seem to separate him from the music that has always been integral to the plots of every game in the entire series.  From the very first Legend of Zelda game, songs featured prominently, and possessed magical properties that could help Link progress through the levels of challenges he faced.  The songs could teleport him forward or back in time, for example, or help him to escape to a specific location at will.  There is much more significance than only that, but one of the instruments we closely associate with Link is his blue ocarina from The Ocarina of Time.

Admit it, a lot of you probably dashed to the Internet to search for a blue ocarina to buy as soon as that game came out in the mid-1990s.  You probably figured you would practice the magical songs Link plays on his ocarina during the game, and play them for your own entertainment.  If so, you were likely frustrated to learn that a standard ocarina is actually not capable of reproducing the melodies Link’s ocarina was able to make.  Thankfully, now you can buy an ocarina with the proper scale to play those songs.  Here is the place:  http://stlocarina.com/

Now, watch as this fellow perfectly plays “The Song of Time.”
