Playing the Ocarina
The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword has been out for a while now, and every time we think of the game series’ protagonist, Link, we can’t seem to separate him from the music that has always been integral to the plots of every game in the entire series. From the very first Legend of Zelda game, songs featured prominently, and possessed magical properties that could help Link progress through the levels of challenges he faced. The songs could teleport him forward or back in time, for example, or help him to escape to a specific location at will. There is much more significance than only that, but one of the instruments we closely associate with Link is his blue ocarina from The Ocarina of Time.
How Games Got Color
Believe it or not, video games weren’t always the beautiful, graphics-rich digital playgrounds we now know. I don’t have to tell you how fast things change in the video game industry, because if you’re like me and my friends, you’ve already spent hundreds of dollars upgrading video cards and adding on to your dream rig over the years, so you know how all that goes. There’s always something better, no matter how up to date you try to keep things. There are newer, more powerful graphics that require newer, more expensive processors and cards to run. It’s nothing new. But it’s a far cry from the quantum leap games took when they first appeared in color.
Kids Learn from Games
Gaming is not just a time wasting activity invented by crazed maniacs to keep your kids from growing up properly and becoming productive citizens; on the contrary, more and more research backs up the long suspected reality that gaming is actually good for most kids. Not only does it inspire imagination and yes, improve hand-eye coordination, but it also activates parts of the brain in a way that spurs the development of critical thinking and analysis. For kids, gaming is a highly educational device that can be their first positive experience with socializing, setting and achieving goals, using teamwork, problem solving, and applying logic.

Evolution of Gaming Infographic
You might have guessed that the majority of serious gaming takes place on some variety of game console, be it a big rig or portable console gaming device. That’s the current trend, but it was not always this way in the wonderful world of gaming. The first place anyone was able to play games was in an arcade back in the late 1970s and early 1980s, before Atari and other early consoles were available or widely used.
